A dental crown is used to restore an already broken tooth or to protect a weak tooth. A crown is also used for aesthetic reasons to make your tooth look better.

[cws-row cols=321][col span=12] Sometimes an abbreviated form of a crown is provided to preserve tooth. This is called an onlay.

They are made from porcelain and sometimes have a metal frame underneath for strength. Some crowns are made entirely out of porcelain. They look very natural and are most often used for front teeth.

A crown usually takes two visits. At the first visit, the teeth are shaped to create space and grip for the crown. Moulds are taken of the teeth and these are used by the laboratory to fabricate the custom crown/s. Together, we decide on the best shape and colour of the crown/s, usually based on the surrounding teeth. The visits may be 3 weeks apart to allow the laboratory to finish the crown, small changes to the colour are finalised at the fit appointment. We always provide you with a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being made.

It is difficult to say how long a crown lasts because every tooth is different and every patient is different, but generally 90% of crowns are in place after 10 years, and studies have shown that even after 30 years 70-80% of crowns are still in place.

Like any dental procedure, a small number of patients may experience side effects of installing a dental crown. These may include infection on the gums or mouth and bleeding around the area of the crown placement.

A single dental crown is approximately $2000, depending on the material used. Wherever possible we always aim to work towards a plan that fits into your individual budget.
