type=text title=”What is a porcelain veneer?”]

A veneer is a thin facing that improves the appearance of front teeth. They can be used to improve the colour, shape and alignment of the teeth. Composite resin (filling material) veneers are a low cost alternative to porcelain veneers, however they tend to attract stains and discolour over time. A porcelain veneer is a customised fit and colour with high stain resistance which creates a realistic and lasting result.

type=text title=”What are veneers made from?”]

Veneers are made from porcelain and each veneer is custom-made in a dental laboratory. This allows us the customise colour, shape and texture to match naturally with your other teeth. Only a thin layer of the natural tooth needs to be removed to fit the porcelain facing to the surface.

type=text title=”What is the difference between a veneer and a crown?”]

A veneer is a thin facing that is placed over the front of a tooth usually to change the way it looks. A crown is more extensive as it covers the whole tooth and also strengthens the tooth. The decision whether to veneer or crown would be based on your individual needs.

type=text title=”How long does the entire treatment process take?”]

A veneer usually takes 2 visits. At the first visit, the teeth are shaped and a colour is taken for the technician to fabricate the veneers.

type=text title=”How long does a veneer last?”]

As front teeth are not generally used for chewing, porcelain veneers last very well. Research allows us to expect a veneer to last over 10 years, however it is very common to see veneers that are 30 years old. As with any dental treatment, proper home care and healthy gums are the best way to increase a veneers lifetime.

type=text title=”What are the risks involved?”]

As only a small portion of the tooth is removed during the preparation, porcelain veneer procedures are very low risk. Once the veneer is placed, the biggest risks are fracturing the porcelain or de-bonding of the facing from the tooth. We suggest using realistic caution when biting into anything with your front teeth so these types of occurrences are minimised.
